Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay had her mother who was socially aware and showed her how to use the arts as a means to express herself. Even though DuVernay lived in Compton with her family she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later inspired to create a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she became interested in production for television journalism. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the home and looking through the waste belonging to one of juries. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired right after graduating from college as an intern at an unassuming studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
